WIMBLEDON Wednesday 2010 is a huge success

The only difference between the real Wimbledon Tennis event and that of Dutchess Day school is the fact that the real event is played on grass. Everything else today was the same…..The high standard of play, the quality courts, the white outfits, thev fine weather (alright , so it usually rains at the real Wimbledon!), and of course the superb strawberries and ice-cream. There were many entertaining games. Charles and Margaret Schneible took on son Gavin and partner Zack to record a narrow 6-4 victory. Blair Emma and Geoff Thatcher took on their fast improving offspring Winnie and Jasmine and Noah Blake and Chrystal Gulbin dared to test the skills of Matt and Maddie.  Ben finally got to play against his mum and Chrystal along with Matt who he has frequently partnered in matches this season. The result was….who knows but they were having a great game. Mr Cissel paired with Darlene Yager, then with Chris Wagner, then with Donna Fedele, proved too strong for Maddie O. and Charlotte. The word is that his partners werre too frequently bailing him out of difficult situations! Bernadette and Chloe were having a very close game against Tia and Chris Wagner…again the result escapes me! finally, it was great to see a three generation match being played on the center court. Laura and Tess were paired against their Grandma and mum Maria. This was an exciting game but guess what… the result is unknown.  Finally, the afternoon was completed by everyone enjoying the fine strawberries, cream and ice-cream provided by the industrious Margaret Schneible who not only found time to play but served up these delicious offerings which were much appreciated by parents, faculty and DDS tennis team alike. Many thanks to Margaret and Blair who I believe had a hand in the cream (not literally of course!). Also thanks to camera man John Allen who took a good number of photos throughout the afternoon. Many of these can be seen on my blog (look under photos section). Finally, thanks to everyone who turned up to play and support the DDS tennis team. As I have said many times already, we did not have a successful team in terms of results but the players have improved tremendously over the course of the season and more importantly have had alot of fun doing it. We say goodbye to our three 8th graders, Charlotte, Maddie O> and Chloe. Charlotte has been an ever present in our tennis team since 5th grade and has developed in to a very strong player indeed. Maddie too has always played tennis and has made tremendous improvements over the years. We we will miss her contribution next season. Both girls have been excellent role models for our younger players. Finally, there is Chloe. Chloe started playing tennis this year. She has gained in confidence over the season and I hope she continues to play and improve. She has been a valuable member of our team this year and played her matches in good spirit.

Thankyou too to Donna Fedele for assisting me in coaching and to Chris WAgner who has so willingly given up her time to help the team. Also thanks must go to all parents who have shown their support on match days and to those who have so willingly provided snacks for matches.

Final Game Report for Girls’ Lacrosse 2010

The DDS girls played their final lacrosse game with Mizzentop on Thursday.  They had an undefeated season riding on the outcome of this game.   Mizzentop was determined to be the spoiler and played hard and aggressively the entire game.  In the first quarter, Dutchess Day’s Isabel delivered the first scoring shot and the team went up 1-0.  Mizzentop was not to be outdone however, and answered quickly with its own goal at the beginning of the second quarter.  The Tigers came back with another goal in the second quarter and the score stood at 2-1 when the half ended.   In the third quarter, the momentum shifted momentarily to Mizzentop, who scored twice on penalty shots, while DDS could only muster one goal against a very tough Mizzentop goalie.  At the end of the third quarter the score was tied 3-3.  Despite the Dutchess players  digging deep to recover every loose ball, or taking every opportunity to shoot, the fourth quarter remained close, with both teams scoring early on. With DDS up 5-4, the Tigers took a timeout.  It would be the last three minutes for each of the eighth graders in their DDS career.  It would be a long three minutes to hold off a determined Mizzentop team and earn the final win for an undefeated season.  Somehow, the Dutchess Day players re-entered the game revitalized and found a way to beat the Mizzentop goalie two more times before the final whistle blew.  The defense fought hard for every loose ball and the team worked together, as they had all season, to come away with a 7-4 win.  Our scorers for the game were Sophie, Hadley, Isabel, Aleksa, and Caterina.  Denny, our goalie “wall”, had four saves in goal.  With a 9-0 record, the DDS girls’ lacrosse team succeeded in realizing their goal of an undefeated season!  Congratulations, and a special thanks to all of the eighth graders for their inspiration, dedication to the game, and willingness to take on the leadership necessary to guide the younger players.  Thank you Denny, Sophie, Isabel, Hadley, Aleksa, and Jessica. Congratulations too, to our younger players, who accepted the challenge to set their sights on an unbeaten season, and who worked hard to make that happen.  Lillian, Hannah, Chelsea, Erica, Hailey, Ellery, Caterina, Anna, Claudia, Danielle, Samantha, and Simone—same time next year?  Thank you to all the parents who came out to the games to cheer on the girls, whatever the distance or the weather conditions.  Deb Meyers, thank you for organizing the much-needed game snacks (and thanks to all those who provided them).  One final thanks to a terrific assistant coach, who made my job so much easier, and helped to make this season so enjoyable—thank you, Mrs. Ackers!

The final tennis matches of the season – report

Dutchess Day School Tennis Team played their final two games of the season this week. The first one which took place on Monday May 24th against Washington Montessori School ended in a 7-3 defeat which reflected the score of our earlier match against them.Charlotte continued her winning form defeating her opponent quite easily 6-3. Maddie, struggling to find her best form this season, lost a close game by 6-4. Jack and Gavin, both won their matches but with vastly different scores. Jack, playing at #4 won comfortably 6-0 while Gavin was pushed to the limit by his opponent but eventually winning 9-7 in a tie break situation. Both Bernadette and Zack battled bravely but both lost their matches 2 and 3 respectively. All our doubles pairs failed to win their matches but the improvement in their game is clear to see.

In our final game against Maplebrook, we tied the match 6-6. We won 6 of our 10 singles games with Charlotte, Maddie, Jack, Gavin, Bernadette and Chloe winning their matches. Congratulations to all our departing 8th graders for winning their final matches at DDS. Zack, Matt, Ben and Tess did exceptionally well in their singles games. It must be remembered that all, save Zack, were playing their first singles matches for DDS this season. Our only two doubles pairs of the afternoon, Tia and Jasmine and Laura and Maddie failed to master their opponents but both pairs won games against their more experienced Maplebrook players! In terms of matches won, this has not been a successful season, but in terms of progress and laying down foundations for a successful tennis team in the future, this season has been a big winner. attendance at practices has been excellent and we have had a good deal of fun along the way! We wish our departing 8th graders, Chloe, Charlotte and Maddie, all the best for the future!

Girls’ Lacrosse Game Report #5 2010

The girls’ lacrosse team played a young Berkshire Country Day J.V. team on Monday.  This match gave the younger DDS players quite a bit of playing time, and allowed people to try out different positions on the field.  Dutchess Day was able to score 6 goals by the middle of the first half, while their goalie, Lillian, did not allow any goals during this time.  The defense, consisting of Danielle, Jessica, Hannah, Erica, and Hailey, shut down the BCD offense in the first half.  By the end of the half, the score was 9-0.  In the second half, DDS set a goal for themselves to pass the ball 5 times consecutively without dropping it.  With some persistence, they met this goal about halfway through the second half.  The defense’s goal was to maintain an extra step on the offense, or to cover for someone who needed help. Although they did a good job of doing this, Berkshire was still able to find the net three times for goals.  Lillian worked hard to contain BCD’s scoring attempts and finished the game with six saves in goal.  Eight DDS players scored during the game—Caterina, Hadley, Denny, Claudia, Ellery, Chelsea, Anna, and Isabel.  Dutchess Day came away with the win, 9-3.  DDS now has one game left in their season—a tough match-up with Mizzentop.  They would love to see all their spectators, who have been faithfully attending each game, for one more support session, in their push to attain DDS GLAX’s most successful season ever.  Thank you all for all your support this year!

Girls’ Lacrosse Game Report #4

The DDS girls’ lacrosse team played their second game Millbrook Recreation on Thursday.  Once again, MR brought two teams, which meant that Dutchess Day played its younger players in the first half and its more experienced players in the second half.  The game was a tough one, with some very aggressive play on the ball.  Throughout both halves, the Tigers maintained their composure and played with excellent passing and communication.  The first half also featured the debut of Lillian in goal, which gave our #1 goalie, Denny, the opportunity to change ends and play some offense.  Both were very successful with their change in roles.  Lillian had 13 saves in goal, while Denny scored her first two goals of the season.  At the end of the first half, the score stood at 5-2.

Despite some ferocious defense by the older Millbrook Rec players, DDS’s passing game prevailed, as the team went on to win 12-3.  Seven DDS players added at least one tally each to the score, some more.  These players included Danielle, Denny, Caterina, Chelsea, Isabel, Aleksa, and Jessica.  Ellery, Anna, Hannah, Erica, Simone, and Samantha stepped up on defense, helping both Lillian, with 13 saves, and Denny, with 2 saves in the second half, to shut down Millbrook’s offense.

The girls have two games left in their schedule, the next with Berkshire Country Day School and the final game with Mizzentop.  Your support at the games has been tremendous, and we hope that all of you will continue to cheer on the team in their final two games.

Girls Lacrosse reports on games 4,5,6 and 7

The girls’ lacrosse team has had a very busy schedule the last couple of weeks.  On Thursday, May 6th, they played a new opponent—Millbrook Recreation, who came to DDS with two teams.  In the first half, their fifth and sixth graders played our younger girls, then in the second half, their seventh and eighth graders played our more experienced players.  Both groups did very well.  Our passing and catching was crucial, playing against an aggressive opponent, and both groups rose to the occasion. With a balanced offensive attack, DDS chipped away at Millbrook, with seven players scoring goals:  Anna, Chelsea, Caterina, Danielle, Ellery, Aleksa, and Isabel.  On the defensive end, Claudia, Lillian, Erica, Samantha, Ellery, Simone, and Hannah, all made it difficult for the Millbrook team to get near the goal, while Denny shut down their scoring attempts with 10 saves in goal.  The final score was 17-5.

In their next game, DDS GLAX traveled to Massachusetts to play Berkshire Country Day School.  It was a thrilling game, with both teams playing very similar styles.  The score jumped back and forth for a while, with the Berkshire goalie keeping the game close with at least 15 good saves.  In the end, our defense prevailed, with Denny making 9 saves and our defense—Lillian, Claudia, Hannah, Hadley, Ellery, Erica, and Simone, shutting the door on most of the BCD scoring attempts.  Our offense again played well against a tough Berkshire defense, with great passing and communication.  Six players shared in our scoring success—Caterina, Anna, Sophie, Isabel, Chelsea, and Aleksa.  The DDS Tigers came away with a well-deserved 11-6 win.

The last two games that DDS played were against IMS, first, away at IMS, and yesterday (Wednesday) at home.  GLAX had played IMS once before at the beginning of the season, and had done extremely well.  In these last two games, DDS continued to play strongly and successfully.  At Indian Mountain, everyone had a chance to experiment with different positions and responsibilities.  The communication among players, and the guidance of the team’s most experienced players, made this a great success.  The Tigers’ passing, catching, and communication remain their strongest assets, with everyone contributing to the overall success of the team.  At IMS, six people contributed goals to DDS’s 11-3 win.  Aleksa, Hadley, Isabel, Danielle, Caterina, Anna, and Hailey all scored.  Denny had two saves in goal and even got the opportunity to run the ball up the field, due to the great defense behind her.

In their final game with IMS yesterday, the Tigers’ offense began quickly, with DDS scoring three goals within the first two minutes or so of the game.  The score climbed steadily for the next few minutes, before IMS finally found a chink in the defensive armor, scoring their first goal.  After a few answering goals by Dutchess Day, IMS called a timeout.  Afterward, they came back fired up and scored three quick goals in succession, before DDS took over the game for good.  This game was the highest scoring game of the season for both squads, with DDS earning the win by a score of 17-9.  Nine Dutchess Day players found the net with their scoring attempts:  Isabel, Sophie, Anna, Caterina, Aleksa, Danielle, Hadley, Ellery, and Chelsea.  Denny had nine saves in goals to keep DDS’s record unblemished against a much-improved IMS team.  The squad’s next game will be against the two-team Millbrook Recreation Club.  We invite everyone to come out and support this exciting team!

Tennis Match v Washington Montessori played on Monday May 17th, 2010

The result of this match was Washington Montessori 7, DDS 3. Although we lost, the results do not reflect the overall performance by a fast improving Dutchess Day team. Charlotte, again outplayed her opponent playing consistent and creative tennis. Maddie and Jack, having won their last matches against Rumsey, could not reproduce the form that helped them play so well. Gavin, however, was a revelation and he cruised to a 6-0 win against a very consistent opponent. In the remaining singles both Bernadette and Zack failed to make a real impact on their opponent and lost their matches 6-3 and 6-1 respectively. However, it must be pointed out that many of their games went to deuce but unfortunately were not able to win the vital points. Our doubles teams had a mixed bag of results. The two outstanding matches were those played by Tia and Jasmine and Winnie and Zack. Both games went to a tie-break situation. Tia and Jasmine won their match narrowly with a tie-break score of 9-7, whereas Winnie and Zack lost theirs by the same narrow margin. Both tie-breaks kept the spectators on the edge of their seats! In the final two doubles games, Matt and Ben had a narrow loss by 6-4, while Chloe and Maddie struggled to find any rhythm and after a long battle, succumbed 6-1 to their opponents. Both pairs were showing improvement from previous matches! We are looking forward to our next home game against IMS to be played on Wednesday May 19th.

Tennis Match v Rumsey played on Thursday May 13, 2010.

In a competition where DDS were definitely the underdogs, we came away with 3 successful matches to our credit on the singles courts. charlotte, playing with immense ambition, swept her opponent away 6-0. Then Maddie O. and Jack, both playing with a lot more confidence, won their singles games 6-2 and 6-4 respectively. Bernadette, Chloe and Gavin did well to get games scored against very strong opposition. All lost by 6 games to 1. We fared less well in our doubles games, losing them all. However, considering all our doubles teams (Zack & Tess, Matt & Ben, Jasmine & Tia, Laura & Maddie B.) have very little playing experience amongst them, they played exceptionally well. They all managed rallies throughout their games and their service skills have improved immensely. We are looking forward to our next match against Washington Montessori on Monday May 17th.

Boys Lacrosse Report on Match v Trinity Pawling on Wednesday May 12th, 2010

On a cold and wet – unlike May weather, Wednesday, Duchess Day School once again played the unbeaten Trinity Pawling.  With a much improved team the tigers played tough but came up short by the final of 4-2. With great play from the defense of Carter, David, Andrew and big Nick, holding a good team to 4 goals is a job well done.  The offense fell short but gave it their all with Neil netting two more goals to lead the Tigers attack.  The Tigers host I.M.S on Friday, May 14th at 3:30pm. The last time these two teams met, the game finished at a 2-2 tie. (Report by Coach Mulholland)
